The 16th Annual Holtville Athletic Club Rib Cook-off scheduled for Saturday, January 27th will have a few unique participants. Board member Rudy Schaffner stated, “The Rib Cook-Off is beginning to get a tremendous amount of attention on the national barbecue scene. We know of at least two separate barbecue event coordination groups from around the United States that are trekking to Holtville for some guidance from the club.”

Within the last few years’ traditional smoke-ring barbecue competitions are becoming more expensive to hold, and sponsors are beginning to shy away. Too many of these events are beginning to loose money. The Athletic Club’s Rib Cook-off held in Holtville, California is actually considered a unique venue. It keeps growing in participants, attendees, and proceeds. Schaffner continued, “ The Athletic Club’s ability to put tens of thousands of dollars back into the local communities is the true key to the events success. This events also gives youth organizations the opportunities to participate as volunteers as well as benefit financially, this has become a true hand-up approach to supporting education and athletic causes throughout the region. The entire club stands behind the hand-up principle and not allowing these groups to earn their support from the organization via a hand-out.”

One new team that has thrown its hat into this years ring has helped energized the club. The Arizona Western College Matador Athletic Association will be bringing their culinary wizardry to support the Athletic Club’s efforts. “The Yuma community has always supported the event, but nothing like this year. We have entertainers, thousands of attendees, and the AWC team coming to one of the single biggest events in the region. The club’s old joke stand back we don’t know how big this thing is going to get has become a reality. We really don’t know, exclaimed Board member Gerry Merten.

One thing is for certain. It’s going to be very interesting. Everyone is encouraged to travel to Holtville and enjoy this year’s marquee event. Attendance is always free and you will be supporting a group that strives to support the children of our communities.
